CONTEXT
Located on the factory floor of Automech’s manufacturing facility in Chakan, the wall was conceived as a way to introduce visiting international clients to the city of Pune while also bringing a moment of visual relief into the working environment for employees.
With many visitors experiencing the factory before the city itself, the wall became an opportunity to situate the place within its larger urban context. The challenge was to translate the character of the city into a form that could exist comfortably within an industrial setting.
IDEA
The city is assembled. Instead of depicting Pune as a single panorama, it was broken into fragments and reorganised through a disciplined grid derived from Automech’s “A” identity.
Within this structure, parts of the city behave like engineered components, coming together to form a composed urban composition.
CRAFT
Spanning nearly seventy feet in length and rising twenty feet high, the mural was first mapped through an architectural grid extracted from the geometry of the Automech mark, allowing each fragment of the collage to be carefully plotted and aligned before execution began.
Measurements, masking and colour fields translated the drawing onto the wall with disciplined precision. A traditional “dori” method, commonly used in construction to mark straight excavation lines, was adapted to establish long continuous guides across the wall.
Piece by piece, the city appeared.
IMPACT
The wall introduces Pune before the city does. Visitors encounter a structured visual composition the moment they step onto the factory floor, while employees gain a moment of colour and cultural familiarity within a highly functional environment.
An interesting discovery emerged over time: because large fabricated components occupy the factory floor, the mural is rarely seen in a single frame. Instead it reveals itself in fragments from different vantage points, constantly shifting and quietly bringing life to the otherwise routine landscape of the shop floor.
